Knowing vs. Experiencing: Bridging the Gap to God’s Love

In the journey of faith, many believers find themselves well-versed in spiritual knowledge and theological concepts, yet feel a profound disconnect when it comes to experiencing God’s love personally. This dichotomy between knowing about God and truly experiencing His love is more common than one might think. Let’s explore this important topic and understand how to bridge the gap.

 

Knowledge Without Love

The Bible highlights the difference between mere knowledge and the transformative power of experiencing God’s love.

Biblical Insight: 1 Corinthians 8:1–3 says, “We know that ‘We all possess knowledge.’ But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know. But whoever loves God is known by God.” Here, Paul points out that knowledge alone can lead to pride, whereas love leads to the edification of others and a deeper relationship with God.

Practical Implications: It’s entirely possible to be an expert in religious teachings, to have studied the Bible extensively, and yet not let that knowledge penetrate the heart. This can result in a form of religiosity that is more about rules and information than about a living, breathing relationship with God.

The Essence of Experiencing God’s Love

Personal Relationship: Ephesians 3:17–19 beautifully captures the essence of this experience: “And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge — that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” Paul emphasizes that the love of Christ is something that surpasses mere intellectual understanding and fills us completely.

Heart Transformation: Experiencing God’s love is about a heart transformation. It means moving beyond intellectual assent to a deep, personal relationship with God. This relationship is characterized by knowing God intimately and allowing His love to transform every aspect of our lives.

The Role of the Holy Spirit

Spirit’s Work: Romans 5:5 tells us, “And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in making God’s love a living reality in our hearts.

Experiential Faith: The Holy Spirit bridges the gap between head knowledge and heart experience. Through the Spirit, we encounter God’s love in a tangible way, leading to a vibrant and dynamic faith.

Living Out God’s Love

Faith in Action: James 2:14–17 challenges us, “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? … In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” True faith is evidenced by actions rooted in love. Experiencing God’s love compels us to express that love through acts of kindness, compassion, and service.

Community and Love: Often, we experience God’s love within the context of community. Through relationships with other believers, we share and receive the love of God in practical and meaningful ways.
